Early Life: Judell "Judy" was born January 14, 1929, on her grandparents farm near Portland, North Dakota, the firstborn daughter of Erling and Della Hovland Lien. Judy was educated in Portland and graduated as her class valedictorian.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Judy continued her studies at Interstate Business College before working at a medical clinic and for the business office at University of North Dakota. She also worked for a Fargo Judge and a United States Senator in Washington D.C. On November 14, 1948, she married Elton Sidney Aarestad. After Elton's college graduation from the University of North Dakota, the young couple moved to Alaska. During their 14 years in Alaska, she found employment at a railroad station, a hospital, and worked with a team of Alaskan agronomists. Several months after the big Alaskan earthquake, the young Aarestad family moved to Oregon, where she found work at both Pacific University and with Washington County Mental Health. What little time she had for hobbies was centered around her family, and of course, travel. Judell and Elton traveled throughout the United States, Africa, Western Europe (including her family's homeland of Norway), Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica. Judell Irene "Judy" Lien Aarestad passed from this life January 29, 2018. She was 89.
Survived By: Her daughters: Jayne Allen (Brian), Elaine Aarestad (Aurelio), and Mary Ellen Nelson (Gary); her brother, Earle Lien (Shelby); five grandchildren: Danielle Hoodenpyl (James), Ashley Wolski, Melanie Nelson, Michelle Nelson and Grant Wilcox; as well as a great-grandchild, Mason.
