According to the 1860 US Census, Alexander was 17 years old, born about 1843 in Virginia. His parents were John and Delia Newell. Their home at the time was Champaign, Illinois. His siblings in 1860 were Benjamin, James A., Elizabeth, Martha, John, Hannah and Sarah.
In 1850 his siblings were Isaac B., Alice, Benjamin F., James M. and Elizabeth C.
Alexander married Emma and she is buried in Harlan Cemetery. Alexander served in the CSA and survived. He is listed with Emma in the 1880 census and were living in Buchanan, Atchison, Missouri. Their children listed in census records were Martha, Mary, Salinda, Catharine
