On 24 January 1856 in New Hanover County, North Carolina, he marries Catherine Croom daughter of Jesse Croom, Jr. (1784-1848) and Julia A. Lamb (?-aft 1850).

Know all men by these Presents, That we John J. Moore, Wm. R. Moore and Jeremiah Hand and are held and firmly bound unto the State of North Carolina in the sum of Thirty Thousand dollars, to be paid to the said State, to which payment, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents.

Sealed with our seals, and dated this 12th day of Sept. A. D. 1864.
