He was born in Washington, D.C., on April 9, 1940, to Ralph and Edna (Whalen) Kersey and was educated in Washington, D.C., area schools. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Chamber of Commerce of Washington, D.C., the Georgetown Preparatory School and the Forum Condominiums, Rockville, Md.
He was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea.
His major interests were floral designing, oil painting and landscaping. He designed the garden at his home at Lake Sheridan with many floral varieties, topiaries, fountains and statues. He enjoyed sitting on the porch overlooking the lake and his garden creations, which were admired by the residents and bystanders. He also enjoyed his time at the beach, casinos, musical theater and concerts at the Kennedy Center. He had a unique sense of humor and could entertain a crowd with his story telling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mildred Michaels, Grace LaRose and Mary Ann Bynaker; and three brothers, Harry, Bob and William Kersey.
Surviving are a brother, Donald Kersey Sr., of Berlin, Md.; a brother, Jack Kersey, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his companion of 48 years, Jerome L. Rutkoski, of Lake Sheridan, Nicholson; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He is also survived by his extended family of the late Jess L. and Beatrice Rutkoski, Jess L. Rutkoski Jr. and Diane M. Plisga and their families.
The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main St., Duryea, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in Holy Rosary Church, 127 Stephenson St., Duryea. Interment will be in Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Twp.
