ORIGIN OF FATAL FIRE AT TABER UNKNOWN
Fuller Details of Tragedy That Claimed "Grandma" Scott
- no inquest to be held
- fire and fatality at the Ed Oliver residence 2 miles north-west of Taber
- Mrs Scott, mother of Mrs Oliver, died in the fire that destroyed the old residence. A new 3 year old comfortable residence sits nearby.
- the family was living in the old 4 room home recently instead of the new house
- large extended family
- Mrs Scott had lived with her daughter's family, the Oliver's, for a number of years. She was 73 and was receiving an Old Age Pension
- Mr Oliver's step-mother was living with her daughter, Mrs Taylor, at Lucky Strike. Louis Oliver and family, resided on a nearby farm and when Mrs Scott was alone, on occassion, it was felt all would be well
- Mr & Mrs Oliver and family frove to Lethbridge on Monday planning to return in the evening, leaving Mrs Scott comfortably home alone.
- Mrs Scott phone in a fire distress call at 7:50 pm. The house was 2 miles out of town and not in the Taber fire departments district. Out of courtesy, Fire Chief Faulds and Councillor Patterson gathered equipment and rushed to the scene, in a car. They realized it was the older house ablaze, and not a haystack, as they originally thought. The house was fully engulfed in flames and the men could not enter the dwelling. They searched outside but did not find Mrs Scott.

The Scott family arrived home and hearing the news, Mrs Scott collpased, requiring medical attention which further delayed the search for her mother.

Grandma Scott was esteemed by many, especially by Old Country folk, and as the Oliver families have sufferred several shocks in the past, year, or so, public sympathy is general for a family group connected with the town, the mines and farming in the iimmediate district since its early days.

There was no insurance on the house.
