From The Bamberg Herald, March 7, 1901, page 3, column 4:
"William Beard, of Colston, was in Ehrhardt last Saturday hauling phosphate, He was complaining of feeling badly. On returning home he went in a buggy with Mr. Calvin Rentz as far as Mr. Rentz's home; then he got out and started on walking; after going a short way, he sat down on a wood pile by the road side to wait for his wagon, which his son was driving, and when the wagon reached him his son went to his father to arouse him, thinking he was either sick or asleep, but he was dead. His body was removed to his home and buried at Colston church burying ground on Monday morning."

From the same page in column 5:
"Great was the shock to this neighborhood when the news was circulated of the death of Mr. Wm. Beard, of Colston, last
Saturday evening. His sudden departure as caused by apoplexy. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss, and many friends to sympathize with them in their sore affliction. His remains were
interred in the Colston cemetery Monday."
