Elizabeth was born on August 12, 1904 to Bernard and Ellen (Moran) Dolan, the second to last of their fourteen children. Before marriage, she was a telephone operator. She married William D. Stewart in 1926, and with him had three children, Robert, Elizabeth (my grandmother), and Paul.
It is because of a decision she made that I am alive today. When Elizabeth, her daughter and my grandmother, was born, she was very sick. She required surgery, or she would have passed away slowly and painfully. Although her mother advised her not to have the surgery performed, saying it was God's will, Nana Stewart asked that the surgery be performed anyway. It was a success and my grandmother would live on Earth for 77 years. As a baby, my grandmother looked sickly, and Nana Stewart's mother told her to cover her up in public. But she defied her mother and showed off my grandmother.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She helped my grandmother give my mom her name. She would live to see seven of my grandmother's thirteen grandchildren born.
She died on February 18, 1993 from Congestive Heart Failure. Her passing marked the passing of all of Bernard and Ellen Dolan's children into Heaven. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Susanna's Church in Dedham, and she was buried at Canton Corner Cemetery, with her husband and his family.
