Evelyn was born in Crystal Springs, MS on January 18, 1932 to Lennie Cox and Charlie W. Ayers. She attended Crystal Springs High School and graduated in 1950. She also attended Gilfoy School of Nursing, graduating in 1953. Later, she continued her education and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mississippi. Evelyn worked as a nurse for over 40 years, primarily at the State Hospital at Whitfield, but also for a brief time at the Veteran's Hospital. Some of her hobbies included cross-stitching and gardening. She was a proud member of Trinity Baptist Church in Pearl, where she taught Sunday School. She was very caring and always willing to help others.
Evelyn is survived by three brothers, James Ayers of Little Rock, Arkansas, George Ayers of Rienzi, Mississippi, and Earl Ayers (Frances) of Euless, Texas; niece, Gina Welton; nephews, Ashley Ayers and Colby Ayers; two great nieces and one great nephew, as well as a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Strong; parents, Charlie and Lennie Cox Ayers; and sister-in-law, Peggie Ayers.
Funeral services will be held at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl on Thursday, December 28 at 11:00 am, with visitation preceding from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Burial will be in Crystal Springs Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
