A native of Ruston and resident of New Iberia, Mrs. Larson passed from this life and went home at 10:20 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Dauterive Hospital in New Iberia.Sarah loved life and every day tried to make the world a little better, a little friendlier, and little kinder for herself, her family, and the people that she met. As a teacher, she admired the smart, hardworking kids, but had a soft spot for the "rascal." She understood long ago that kids who were off to a rough start in life needed a little more encouragement than some others. They didn't need a free pass or an excuse, they just needed a little more of your time and your concern. She understood and believed in unconditional love long before it became a psychological buzzword. The phrase "never met a stranger" certainly applied to her. Within minutes of meeting anybody, Sarah's genuine concern, persistence, and sometimes just plain curiosity would take over. She always found a connection via a chain of friends and/or family. She felt that the most important mission in her life was to model the love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, toward her fellow man. She believed that her actions might be the only sermon that some people would ever hear. Sarah finished the race and kept the faith.

Mrs. Larson was a retired teacher. She began teaching in 1942 in Emerson, Ark., after completion of her B.A. from Louisiana Tech in Ruston. One day at church she heard of a desperate shortage of teachers and Baptist missionaries in the bayous of South Louisiana. She felt called to take the journey by car, train and boat to the community of Bayou Chene deep in the heart of the Atchafalaya Basin. Sarah knew no one when she arrived, but was welcomed and accepted by all. She taught all grades in a one room schoolhouse for several years. There was a schoolboat to transport the kids to school because the waterways were the only highways. She met and married her husband "Jay" Larson and then gave birth to her two sons while living there. After the last school closed because of flooding concerns, the Larson moved to New Iberia. She had some short term assignments before becoming part of the first faculty at the brand new Elizabeth Forgey Elementary School. The school was later renamed North Lewis. Mrs. Larson retired from the school in 1984 as a fifth-grade teacher. She continued to teach Sunday School regularly and also taught reading and writing to adults who did not have the opportunity to attend school.

Sarah Larson loved her town, New Iberia, and also its high school sports. She was a tireless supporter of "her" Yellow Jackets and chaperoned many bus trips. She was a longtime member of the Jacket Backers organization and, upon her retirement, was awarded an athletic letter jacket by the administration of New Iberia Senior High School.

Survivors include her sons Steve Larson and wife, Norma, of New Iberia and Randy Larson and wife, Kim, of Lafayette; three grandchildren Sarah Ashley Larson, Stephanie Lassalle and Billy Angers; five great-grandchildren Brandy Angers, Johnathon Angers, Gabrielle Lassalle, Tori Bayard and Tara Bayard; her brother John Baker Barr of Shreveport; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry John Larson; her parents, John Mallory Barr and Alma Baker Barr; brothers Egan Barr, Turner Barr, Warren Barr and his wife, Lucille Poole Barr; and sister-in-law Edith Ann Jones Barr.

Pallbearers will be Billy Angers, Jody Larson, John Baker Barr Jr., Charles Merkel Richard Jr., Zack Mitchell and Loles Duhon. Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy "T-Pop" Derouen, Charles W. Keller, and Karl Richard.

Memorial contributions may be made in Sarah Larson's name to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Box 4196, Monroe, LA, 71211-9986.
