Vietnam Veteran, David Monk

David Monk is a native of Fairbanks, Indiana who calls Signature Healthcare home today.

This father of five is a proud veteran who served in the Vietnam conflict.

"I started out on the boats they were called ICMS," said David Monk. "Small landing craft boats."

David joined in 1967 and served the Army for five years.

Like most Vietnam Vets, it's hard to revisit the memories.

"We got hit one time when we got hit or attacked, and I don't talk about it. It is very sad that we got stuck onto the field with no ammunition. That was a chilling day there."

David says the Army made him stronger.

"When I got in the Army I weighed 135 pounds, when I came out I weighed 180 pounds. I was solid."

In basic training back then, it was about learning to stay alive.

"In basic you go through a firing range and you gotta stay down and you gotta tunnel. They got an explosives in them and you gotta stay underneath that barbed wire. Cause if you're raised up you'd get hit by a bullet."

Today, David supports Veterans of all conflicts and stays involved with local Veterans programs.

"A few years ago I joined the DAV. A few month ago i joined the ARP. Right now i'm a life member in the VFW in Brazil and the M-Vets in West Terre Haute."

David is proud of his family and proud of being raised with values he still holds today.

"I treated the people here like I like to be treated, and that's why everyone is nice to me cause I'm nice to them. That's the way I was raised."
