Hootie Russell passed away Monday, December 18, 2017 at his home in Malta, Texas. He was 90. Hootie was born April 29, 1927 in Malta, Texas, to Joseph Christopher and Maybelle Mercer Russell.

He was a retired Supervisor of Transportation from Red River Army Depot, a Master Mason, a Lifetime Member of the American Legion, and a member of Malta Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Music Director for 40 years. Hootie, one of the “Chosin Few”, was a veteran of the United States Marines and the United States Navy having served during WWII and the Korean Conflict

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ima Faye Russell; and one son, Michael Othel Russell.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Karen Russell of Malta, Texas; five grandchildren and their spouses, Joseph and Leah Russell of Malta, Texas, David Russell of Malta, Texas, Heather Russell of New Boston, Texas, Kourtney and Clint Tucker or Simms, Texas and Melani Taylor of Malta, Texas; 10 great grandchildren, Bailey Taylor, Maggie Taylor, Newt Taylor, J. D. Spears, Jack Abston, Kylie Russell, Kennedy Tucker, Rhett Tucker, Tex Tucker, and Piper Tucker; two special friends and caregivers, Penny Obenoskey and Donna Duncan; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Malta Baptist Church in Malta, Texas under the direction of Bates Family Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Ford and Rev. Kelly Shanks officiating. Interment will follow at Woodmen Cemetery in De Kalb, Texas.
