Claude D. "Butch" Lowery, 79, of West Lafayette, passed away at 9:12 a.m. Friday, December 8, 2017 at St. Elizabeth East Medical Center, Lafayette.

He was born April 24, 1938 in Lafayette to the late Claude D. and Dorothy (McNeely) Lowery and was a 1956 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School.

Butch was a proud United States Marine and was honorably discharged in 1958 as a Corporal E-3.

His first marriage was to Janet L. Barton, they later divorced. He then married Janet L. Horney and she survives.

Mr. Lowery worked for Eli Lilly Company, Tippecanoe Labs, for 32 years retiring in 1990. After retiring from Lilly Butch worked as a Farmers Insurance Agent for 13 years. In August of 2004 he started working for Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston and was an instrumental part of providing services to the community. Butch was kind and considerate to those he helped and will be fondly remembered as friendly and professional. He retired in 2014 after 10 years of service.

Butch enjoyed playing and teaching golf and was a golf instructor for many years. He was so proud of his children and their accomplishments. Of special note was teaching them golf and following his daughter Ashley during her golf career both in high school and college.

Survivors include his wife; four children; one sister; and three grandchildren.

Preceding him in death with his parents is a half-brother, Raymond Talbert.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until the time of memorial service at 7 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home (101 West 4th St. Brookston); Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds to officiate with military rites to follow.

Butch cared deeply about treatment of others including animals; because of this the family requests donations instead of flowers to Natalie's Second Chance Shelter of Lafayette or Food Finders Food Bank. Memorials may be given during service times or mailed to the Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home (PO Box 509 Brookston, IN 47923).
