On remembering Donna Winters Dagar
Surrounded by her children, Donna Winters Dagar, completed her life journey on December 2, 2017. Donna Winters Dagar was born in Oceanside, New York to William (Bill) and Lucie Helton Winters. The family was one of the first families to settle in Levittown. She grew up in a typical Long Island home with parents who furnished her with opportunities to hone her talents.
Donna developed into a Nationally Ranked baton twirler leading to her attendance at Southwest Texas State University. Donna was a member of the twirling squad and graduated with an Elementary Education degree. During her time at SWT she met her soul mate Albert Dagar. The two married and settled in Austin.
Donna taught at Pecan Springs Elementary and Wooten Elementary for most of her teaching career. After a short retirement in 2001, Donna, went back to teaching at Pearce Middle School. Once again, she retired, but she could not give up her passion for teaching. She finished her 44 year career in education at Huston-Tillotson University certifying new teachers.
While teaching was her passion she supported her husband Albert in growing the family business, Dagar's Catering. The two became the 2nd generation owners of Dagar's Caterers, and although Albert was the Caterer Exemplar, it was Donna who was the Catering Heart of the business, as she was the baker and innovator of 100s of superlative wedding cakes for Austin brides.
Donna and Albert raised four children at their Austin home where they taught their children the importance of family and education. All four children attended Austin schools and graduated from Texas universities. All four children were present at the both of their parents passing; a true testament of the love a sacrifice for which these two beautiful souls were responsible.
The scope of Donna's life can be expressed as giving, loving, and honoring the traditions of wife, mother, sister, and friend. Heaven, the angels, and sweet Albert are all waiting to welcome Donna, a woman of rare courage and indomitable spirit. All would agree that our remembrances of her emanated from honoring her as she shared her heart and life with others.
Her legacy is love to her family, her children and grandchildren, her siblings, and her friends. Each of us who knew her has memories to share of her role in our lives. When she revealed her last illness she said, "It is what it is;" and "I choose quality of life over quantity of time." Bravery, courage, and strength of will empowered her and brought her survivors some consolation. Love guided her actions and emotions as she, until the end, offered selfhood freely and without any expectation of the cost of her actions.
Donna is survived by her children and their spouses, Fred and Janalyn Dagar, Kathryn and Frank Albarado, John and Melissa Dagar, and Raymond Dagar; five grandchildren Briella, Albert, Gus, Jared and Jaden; her siblings and spouses George and Carolyn Winters, Pam Crerend, Larry "Bear" Alderman. Judy and Jack Moore and Cindy Parker; her aunt Esther Joucken and many nieces and nephews.
She is proceeded in death by her husband, Albert Dagar; parents Bill and Lucie Winter; brother and sister, Michael Winters and Jan Alderman.
Without her, the world will be a lonelier place, our smiles will be met with tears, and our lives will be less fulfilled. Donna will be remembered as a very special and brave women facing death with grace and leaving us with a final gift-teaching us how to deal with death as it inevitably comes to us as well.
