Nettie Kussmaul Allen was born on 21 Dec 1872 in Muskingum County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Paul Kussmaul and Harriet Jane Baughman. On 16 Nov 1896, she married a widower, Alfred Snyder Allen. Between 1900 and 1906, they journeyed to Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas, to make their home together. Their farm was located at 1020 Malvern Avenue.
Nettie and Alfred had two children together. Their son Charles Edward Allen was born in 1906 and their daughter Katherine Louise Allen (Green Johnson) was born in 1908. In addition to these children, Nettie raised her brother Clyde after the death of both of their parents.
Nettie is found on the 1900 Census living in Muskingum, Ohio, with husband Alfred and caring for her younger brother Clyde. On the 1910 Census, she is found on the farm on Malvern Avenue (Hot Springs), with her husband and two children. In 1920, she is still living on the farm with her husband and two children, along with a hired hand. Sadly, her husband died later that year. In 1930, Nettie is found living on the farm with daughter Louise and Louise's first husband, Leroy Green. By 1940, Nettie is alone on the farm, dying just three years later in 1943.
It is currently unclear where husband Alfred was buried. A family plot was purchased at Calvary Cemetery, in Section D, and is marked with a concrete step inscribed with the surname Allen. Nettie is buried in Space 2 of this plot and cemetery records indicate that a monument was originally present. These records do not indicate any burial in Space 1. As Alfred died 23 years prior to Nettie and the plot was purchased at that time, it is possible that he is buried in Space 1 next to Nettie. Unfortunately, no headstone for Alfred or Nettie are now found in the plot... only the concrete step remains. Spaces 3 and 4 were later sold to the Hesterly family.
To find this grave, enter through the main cemetery gate from Greenwood and turn left on the first access road. Just before you reach the small service building on the left side of the road, walk right into Section D. The concrete step is several rows in, just before the large Mazzia family plot.
