Johanna's parents, Owen and Bridget Daly/Daily were both born in Ireland and came to Wisconsin before Johanna was born. She married her first husband, Harvey Myron Rolfe, on 8 October 1875 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Together they had two children, an unnamed infant who died and a son Owen Merriman, named after her father (Owen) and Harvey's younger brother (William Mariman Rolfe) who died in 1865 while serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. Harvey left her a widow in 1909. On 18 July 1915 she married Lars Moore Larson who, like Harvey, was also deaf. Lars died in 1930 and left her widowed again.
