Harvey contracted scarlet fever as a child and as a result he was a deaf mute. However, this did not prevent him from being a successful husband and father who worked as a carpenter most of his life and also later as a house painter. He died at the age of 68 as a result of tuberculosis. Harvey and Johanna had one son, Owen Merriman, and also an unnamed infant that died. Owen was named after Johanna's father, Owen, and Harvey's brother William Merriman who died in the Civil War.
