Soccer Player. He was the recipient of the 1954 FIFA World Cup Champion. A left wing, he played 39 times for Germany with 15 goals and won the World Cup with Germany in 1954. His cross in the 84th minute to Helmut Rahn led to Rahn's game and cup winning goal in Germany's 3-2 victory over Hungary. He also participated in the 1958 and 1962 World Cups as Germany's captain. For his club team, 1 FC Köln (1 FC Cologne), who he joined in 1948, he played 394 games with 254 goals, and led them to two German championships in 1962 and 1964 and three second place finishes. After retirement in 1965, he was an assistant coach with Cologne until 1969. After that, he owned a gas station in Cologne and worked in advertising. He was elected six times as a member of the club's Honor Council. In 1963 he was voted Germany's Player of the Year.
