For his club team, 1 FC Köln (1 FC Cologne), who he joined in 1948, he played 394 games with 254 goals, and led them to two German championships in 1962 and 1964 and three second place finishes. After retirement in 1965, he was an assistant coach with Cologne until 1969. After that, he owned a gas station in Cologne and worked in advertising. He was elected six times as a member of the club's Honor Council. In 1963 he was voted Germany's Player of the Year.
