From the Jackson Daily News, June 23, 1914, p. 8:

There occurred in this city Sunday morning the death of one who had long borne the title of a mother in Israel, Mrs. Virginia Ellis, in her girlhood Virginia Rogers, a noble woman who came to Mississippi almost three score years ago a bride with her young husband, Mr. W. F. Ellis, direct from their Virginia home, in Southampton county, and while Mrs. Ellis’ home had not always been in this city she had held close connection with it and its people for three score years, and several of her children have here resided from time to time, and one son, Mr. Linnie Ellis, has here reared his family.

Mrs. Ellis was widowed many years ago, her husband, the late William Frank Ellis, having died when their large family of children were all young, and nobly did the bereaved wife rally to her duties as mother and protector of the large circle of her beloved children, of whom the following survive her: Mrs. J. R. Hartin, Mrs. (Dr. ) Little of Wesson, C. T. Ellis of Meridian, J. S. Ellis of Hattiesburg, Mrs. Jennie Hartzog of California, Messrs. L. B. Ellis, C. G. Ellis, W. H. Ellis and Miss Siddie Ellis, most of whom were beside their mother when the end came after a long period of intense suffering which was born with Christian resignation and a beautiful patience. Her death came with the Sabbath morning, and from the home of her son, where she had been tenderly nursed during her illness (Mr. C. G. Ellis, at the Waycaster place, this city), she was buried yesterday, Rev. P. D. Hardin conducting the impressive burial service and the interment taking place in old Greenwood, where her beloved husband sleeps the last long sleep. . . .

Mrs. Ellis was born March 17, 1837, in Southampton county, Va., and was married Oct. 22, 1855, to Wm. Frank Ellis of Plymouth, N.C. They came to Jackson in October, 1858. She was a member of the First Methodist church here.
