James E. Powell, leader of the Reconnoitering Party on the morning of 06APR1862, had been a Major for just thirteen days when mortally wounded/buried at Shiloh. He was an officer in the Regular Army, 1st United States Infantry from 1855 (first enlisting during the Mexican War in 1847), stationed in TX/IT where he both fought Indians and brokered at least one well-documented Peace Treaty at Rush Springs (Oklahoma). His son, Jimmy, had been with him for all seven years ~ two as his father's Waiter ~ and was not yet twelve when James died. It's been suggested that the scars on his face could've come from fencing if not denoting some kind of relationship with Indians from his time as a hunter. He also had a scar thru' his right eyebrow and one coming down from the left corner of his mouth.

Ambrotype c.1848 ~ After being their civilian Color Sergeant, James Powell first enlisted into 9th Infantry, Company A as a Private at Castle Perote, Mexico, during the Mexican War in 1847; he had been a hunter, and family has noticed he had <-shaped scars on both sides of his face, coming out from his ears into his cheeks and already there on this and his 1849 wedding daguerreotype ~ likely to have denoted some kind of relationship with Indians during his hunting days, or possibly from fencing.

Iraq 2004: First Japanese military deployment ~ for humanitarian support only, not as war-fighters ~ since end of WW2 in 1945; who would've guessed what was on the horizon for these two Colonels. The American is Major James Edwin Powell's ggGrandson.
