OBITUARY:
Private services are pending for Nell Boatman Bell Rumley who died October 9, 2017, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Born March 19, 1928, in Nacogdoches County, she was the daughter of Leonard Langston Boatman and Stella Vardeman Boatman.

The family moved to Mauriceville, Texas in 1942. After graduating from Mauriceville High School in 1945, Nell attended Stephen F. Austin University for one year before moving to Houston to work as an office clerk. In Houston, she met and married William Stephen Bell with whom she had two children, Sharon and Stephen. The family lived in San Antonio and Wichita Falls while Mr. Bell served in the Air Force and in Austin, Texas where Mr. Bell graduated from the University of Texas Law School in 1960.

After Mr. Bell’s untimely death in 1962, Nell and the children moved to Nacogdoches so Nell could complete her B.A. Degree at S.F.A. After her graduation, Nell taught high school for several years before switching careers. She began work as an employee of the State of Texas in 1970 and retired from the local Department of Human Services in 1988. She was a dedicated teacher and government employee, but Nell considered being a devoted mother and grandmother her most important role in life.

Much admired for her quick wit and green thumb, she was an avid reader and gardener. Known for her independence, she put others before herself and consistently cared for sick family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William (Bill) Bell, her sisters Kathleen Farago, Marie Bond, Sammye Kolius, Ruby Helen McClelland, Patricia Blacksher, and brothers Max and Langston Boatman.

Survivors include her son Stephen Bell; daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Allen McKemie; grandchildren Jamie Dixon and her husband Deric, William McKemie, Meredith McKemie, and Stefanie Bell; great-grandchildren Marissa, Mason, Jamarcus, and Kara; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nell was very well read and informed about politics and world events even in her senior years. She will be remembered for her strength, perseverance, and independence. Dearly loved by her children and grandchildren, she will be deeply missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. Loyd Whitley, Aileen, Brooks, Mandy, Kay, Debra, and Kisha at Nacogdoches Medical Center for their kindness and compassion shown to Nell in her final days.
