In 1890, he was living in Conewago Township, Adams County. His death is also reported as occurring in East Berlin, Adams County. No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.

Elias was a Civil War veteran. He was drafted at the age of forty-three in Adams County on October 16, 1862. He mustered into federal service at Gettysburg on November 6 as a private with Co. H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and was honorably discharged with his company on July 28, 1863. His brother Peter Hoffman Adams served in the same regiment but in Co. H.
