Little is known of Strother Hansford. Even his tombstone does not include his first name. He was the husband of Elizabeth Hansford and the father of Jonas (b. @1856), Clarissa (b. @1858), Caroline (b. 1860), Strother (b. @1861), Amanda (b. @1864), Amelia (b. @1865), Barbary (b. @1867), William H. (b. @1868), and Reuben (b. 1870). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Hamiltonban Township and sttod 5' 8" tall with black hair, hazel eyes, and a black complexion.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Hampton Township, Adams County, February 25, 1865, and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 28 as a private with Co. C, 24th U.S. Colored Troops. He served as hostler at post headquarters and honorably discharged with his company October 1, 1865, at Richmond, Virginia.

Reportedly, he died sometime after June 1890, but that is in question.
