Mrs. Margaret Armstrong, aged 72 years, died at her residence on East Chapel avenue at 7 45 o'clock yesterday morning. Her demise was caused in a peculiar manner.
One morning five weeks ago she was preparing breakfast when her shawl caught on a utensil of boiling coffee on the stove and overturned it, the scalding liquid falling on one of her feet.
Gangrene set in and medical skill could not stay the progress of the dread disease. She suffered intense agony, and for a week preceding her death, had partial lockjaw as a result of the pain.
The deceased was born in Powell's Valley, Dauphin county, and came to Carlisle when quite young. She was a companionable old lady, and by her retiring disposition and noble character won the respect of many.
Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Methodist Church. She was the widow of Daniel Armstrong, saddler, who died about two years ago. The only survivor of the family is a son, Frank, the baker, who resides at home.
The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from her late residence. Interment in the Old Graveyard.
