James Robison was born on October 19, 1740 in Columbia County, New York. His parents were John Robison and Janneke Oosterhout. He married Rachel Brussie (daughter of Gabriel Brussie and Jannetje Hollenbeck) on November 2, 1766 in Claverack, Columbia County, New York. James fought in the American Revolution. On June 2, 1791 he died from an accidental discharge of a gun while hunting pigeons with a friend. James' wife was buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Phelps, Ontario County, New York (see her memorial page).

Note: James' gravestone is in what is known as the "Copake Flats Burying- Ground" situated in the lot of the "Copake United Methodist Church".

"Sacred to...The memory of Capt... James Robison...who fell June 2, 1791...by ye accidental discharge...of a gun Aged 51 years...Now in a moment he was gone...Eternity in view...No time to settle his estate...Or bid his friends adew."
