The son of Jacob & Elizabeth (McCullough) Munshour, in 1850 he was living with his farming family in Frederick County, Maryland, although he is not found in the 1860 census. He stood 5' 9" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Hedgesville, West Virginia, and mustered into federal service at Harpers Ferry reportedly on March 16, 1865. That is what one portion of his compiled military service records and his enlistment paper claim, but another section of his CMSR says he enlisted and mustered in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 8, 1865. The former is more likely true. He mustered into federal service as a private with Co. F, 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company June 28 1865. At muster-out, he purchased his belt and plate for $1.95. His name absent from the company descriptive list.

He married Sarah A. Zentz April 17, 1873, in Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland, and fathered Morris Edgar (b. 05/17/74), Anna Myrtle (b. 03/05/77 - married James E. Rider), Mrs. S. H. McCullough, and Mrs. Alvin Sheets. In 1890, he was living in Cumberland Township, Adams County, where he died at age 69-5-13 from "organic heart disease and cerebral hemorrhage" with "passive congestion" a contributing factor. Per his death certificate data, his birthdate calculates to December 23, 1838, despite the document contradictorily containing the same birth date shown in the heading above.
