JEAN (LOGUE) ENSIGN Emma Jean (Logue) Ensign died peacefully on September 11, 2017 at Villa St. Francis in Olathe, KS, at the age of 89. Jean was born on October 17, 1927, in Cameron, MO, to Vera Belle Rice and Charles Edwin Logue. She graduated from Cameron High School in 1945. During high school, she played snare drum and was a majorette in the band. Jean worked as a bookkeeper, a secretary at three Presbyterian churches, as well as at other businesses, before becoming a Johnson County realtor. She thrived in the real estate business, helping "build" two of her houses, her last house featuring solar panels, a pioneering feat in the late 1970s. Jean loved to cook and was known for her pies, spaghetti and meatballs, banana and pumpkin breads, and pineapple upside down cake. A dedicated and active church member, she started the Harvest Blend Caf‚ at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, devoting countless hours to this successful endeavor. She ran a tight ship in "her" church kitchen but was loved by all who volunteered with her. Jean also worked in food services for the Shawnee Mission School District. Banner and Lemon Lime were Jean's two clown personae. In her late '60s, she would entertain "old folks" in the clown outfits she created. She was an excellent seamstress. Jean loved to travel, often flying with her children and husband, an employee of TWA. After Harold retired, he and Jean traveled to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii, along with frequent trips to California to visit her sister. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing, and big band music, as well as crime and mystery TV shows. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Harold Ensign; her sisters, Leona, Elsie, Juanita, Alta, Charlene, and Billie Jo; and her cat, Katy. Jean is survived by her children, Joy Bunch (Stephen), Lawrence, KS, Janet Ensign (Deb Dobson), Atlanta, GA, and Kent Ensign (Linda), Overland Park, KS; her grandchildren, Matthew Bunch (Mary Holzhausen), Jonathan Bunch (Lauren Krivoshia), Derik Ensign (Mindy), and Brooke Heinzmann (Ethan); and her great-grandchildren, Juniper Bunch, Isaac Bunch, Conner Ensign, Landon Ensign, Cameron Ensign, Naomi Heinzmann, and Nadia Heinzmann. She is also survived by her 99-year-old sister, LaVerla Elliott of California; as well as many nieces and nephews and their progeny. Also surviving is Ted Ensign, Harold's brother, who introduced Jean to Harold in the spring of 1945. Four months later, on September 9, Harold and Jean were married. A memorial service and potluck are scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, October 14 at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 11100 College Blvd, OPKS. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jean's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Alzheimer's Association, the Timpani Fund at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, or donate blood. Memories of Jean and condolences may be shared at www.mcgilleyhoge.com. The family would like to thank Villa St. Francis and the Catholic Community Hospice for their diligent and loving care of our mother.
