He graduated from Harvard University in 1956 and the Executive Program at Dartmouth College, Amos Tuck Business School in 1974.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at the Headquarters of the U.S. Army, Europe, in Heidelberg, Germany.
Dick Ahlstrom was an Officer of Diamond Shamrock Corporation. He retired in 1987 as Sr. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He was a former Director of Texas Commerce Bank - Dallas. He was also Vice Chairman of Junior Achievement of Dallas, and 18 year member of the Board of Directors of the Dallas Theater Center, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a Fellow of the Explorer's Club of New York.
He authored articles and was also featured in other magazine articles. He was the author of two books. The first book is considered an important reference book in archaeology. His second book, Texas Civil War Artifacts, is recognized as one of the finest reference books published on the Civil War. He assembled one of the largest collections of Texas Civil War artifacts in private hands. This collection can now be seen at The Texas Civil War Museum in White Settlement, Texas. His love of American history and artifacts was well known and lovingly shared with all who knew him.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 17, 2017 at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75225.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard's memory to the SPCA, www.spca.org.
