He was born about 1803, as he died in his 45th year of his age. In February 1828, Samuel was involved in a pistol duel with his roommate, William Bond Martin, at the University of Maryland. Samuel fired first, heading his opponent in his temple, killing him. Samuel was asked to leave the University afterwards. The duel was over a deferred payment, although some think it was also over the affection of Miss Mary Polk, who a few months later married Samuel on September 28, 1828 in Baltimore. In 1829, Samuel was a 5th Auditor of the Treasury and in 1831 was the United States Consul to Tangiers. Returning to the University of Maryland, he graduated from its medical school in 1834 and he and his family moved to the Red River in Louisiana. In 1842, he returned to Maryland and served as the military storekeeper/commander at Pikesville Arsenal until his death in 1847 there.
