She was the daughter of Josiah Polk and Rebecca Troup [who married second to John Beale Davidge; Josiah Polk died in 1814-1815]. Mary's birth and death dates come from her obituary, with a transcription posted here on her memorial.

Mary married first to Samuel J. Carr on September 30, 1828 in Baltimore, Maryland; the bride was just 13, almost 14 years of age. Her obituary mentions a surviving son by Samuel. Samuel died in 1847, but it wasn't until June 9, 1866 that she married a second time to David Dudley Field Jr. She died at the Carrolton Hotel in New York City from heart disease, but the funeral was at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Baltimore several days later.

OBITUARY: Baltimore, Maryland newspaper, issue of April 22, 1876.
The funeral of Mrs. David Dudley Field, of New York, who, as has already been stated, died at the Carrollton Hotel last Wednesday night after a lingering illness, took place yesterday afternoon from St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where the casket containing the remains were transferred from Carrollton. The funeral services were held at half past 1 o'clock in the afternoon, Rev. S. B. Hodges, rector of St. Paul's Church, offiating; no sermon delivered. The service lasting for half an hour. Among the congregation were a number of prominent Baltimoreans, personal friends of the deceased. After the service the casket, which was of rosewood, lined with satin, was replaced in the hearse. It was covered with flowers, arranged in crosses and crowns, sent by the friends and relatives of the deceased, a cross of ivy being contributed by the ladies of the Carrollton Hotel. The plate on the coffin bore the following inscription: "Mary Elizabeth, wife of David Dudley field, born December 1814, died April 19th, 1876." The pallbearers were Judges George Wm Brown and W. _ Giles, Dr. R. S. Stewart, W. G Harrison, Lambert Gittings and Wm. George Read. The following relatives who had come from New York followed the coffin as m___ers: David Dudley Field, his son David Dudley Field Jr., Mr. S. J. Carr of New York, a son of the deceased by her former husband; Cyrus W. Field of New York and daughter, Judge Field of Washington, Lucius Polk and wife and others. The remains were interred in the family vault in Greenmount Cemetery beside the grave of the former husband of the deceased, Samuel J. Carr of Pikesville Arsenal. The funeral arrangements were under the directions of H. W. Jenkins & Son.
