The 1870 ( 13 July) census shows J. J. and Emily O. Excell living in Brady's Bend township, Armstrong, Pennsylvania with 7 their children all of whom were born in Ohio, except William (note that William was born in 1869- this had to be John G) Children were Edwin O 18, Cecelia 16, Emma 12, Viola V 10, Mozar7 (Mozart), Lily 4, William 1. The 1880 (16 June) census had them living in New Matamores, Ohio with John Married Marie A Schwartz 13 June, 1898 in Harrisburg, PA. He was a minister and she was a missionary. According to the 1900 census they were living in the Dowie Institute, a place where Faith Healing was what the founder of the institute taught and preached. 7 November 1903 John Gabriel Excell signed a request for a passport to visit the Orient, parts of Europe, and other parts of the world with the intent to return in 2 years. It stated that he was born in Brady's Bend, PA and that he was a resident of Zion, Illinois, where he followed the occupation of being a minister of the gospel. His father was a naturalized citizen. There was a physical description: 34 years old, 6' 2", forehead broad and thick, Hazel eyes, nose straight, med mouth, prominent chin, fair complexion, face slightly oval, dark brown hair.
On the first of January 1904, Overseer John Gabriel Excell, General Ecclesiastical Secretary of Christian Catholic Church in Zion, accompanied the General Overseer to go on an Around the World Visitation. It started by visiting Louisiana, Texas, and California. They were to arrive in San Francisco Jan. 20 to have a meeting. Once on the Steamer Sonoma they were to touch at Honolulu, Hawaii Wed. 27th, Pago, Pago, Samoa, Feb. 3 and Auckland, New Zealand Feb. 8, and many other stops before returning.
May 1906 John resigned from his official office and he and his wife resigned from the church.
Waukegan News, Dec. 11, 1906, Sun. Tues, p 3, put out of fellowship; now in a small town in Wisconsin, from which by correspondence he is stirring up rebellion in all branches.
In the 1910 census (listed as John E, but, the E. looks like the capital G - in the first name Gladys down below) they were living in Evansville City, Ruck, Wisconsin. John was listed as being an instructor for violin and piano. The 1920 census found them living with John's sister Cecil E (Celelia) in Lakewood, Cuyahoga, Ohio. In 1930 he was listed an undenominational pastor, and they were living with his sister, Cecilia. The 1940 census found them in Ohio and in the same house as in 1935. In 11 April 1950 when the census was taken found them living on Chesterfield Ave, Lakewood, Cuyahoga, Ohio. John, at the age of 80, being a proprietor and salesman for retail sales of Greeting cards.
