James “Dan” Bernaix, 64 of Granite City passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017 at St. Louis University Hospital surrounded by his family.

Dan was born on July 10, 1953 in Granite City, Illinois.

Dan was an Auditor for the Illinois Department of Revenue. He was a member of Nameoki United Methodist Church in Granite City, Illinois and a life time member of the National Rifle Association. He was an outdoors man who belonged to Ducks Unlimited and enjoyed hunting deer and water fowl. But most of all, Dan loved to spend time with his family. He will be remembered for his giving spirit and all the special times he shared with his family and friends.

Dan is survived by, and will be missed by, his wife, Marilyn (Bess) Bernaix, whom he married on March 22, 1974; his children, Justin (Tonya) Bernaix of Glen Carbon, Illinois, Kristin (Jeremy) Hickam of Granite City, Illinois, Tiffany (Jeremy) Dunivan of Granite City, Illinois; his parents, James A. (Patricia) Ellenwood Bernaix of Granite City, Illinois; his grandchildren, Ella Hickam, Caden Bernaix, Keller Hickam, Kinsley Bernaix, Lyla Hickam; his brothers, Terry (Laura) Bernaix, Dennis (Susan) Bernaix, Timothy (Cara) Bernaix and many other close family members and friends.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nameoki United Methodist Church, 1900 Pontoon Road in Granite City. In celebration of Dan’s life, services will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the church with Pastor Mike Rayson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City is serving the family.

Memorials in memory of Dan may be directed to Nameoki United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
