Kappa, IL OCT 5, 1898 - On Tuesday night between nine and ten o'clock Mr. John Cleary, Sr., came from El Paso on the passenger train which was late, and started up the track towards home. When near the north switch he was struck by a south-bound freight train. His face was cut and bruised and he also was injured internally, from the effects of which he died today at 12:30. Mr. Cleary has lived a mile north of Kappa a number of years. He was a native of Ireland and fifty-three years old. He was an honest man and good neighbor. He leaves a wife and seven children, four sons and three daughters, all grown except the youngest daughter.
