Standing Under Tree Close To Home When Bolt Struck; Funeral Held Monday
Funeral services for Mrs. James Coffey, 69, who died early Friday (June 25, 1948) morning at St. Joseph's Hospital, Bloomington, of injuries sustained Wednesday afternoon when struck by lightning, were held at 9 a.m. Monday in St Mary's church at El Paso, IL.
The Rev Fr. James A. Dollard officiated. Burial was in St Joseph's cemetery in El Paso, IL.
Sarah Cleary was born June 29, 1876, at Gilman, a daughter of John and Jane Reeves Cleary. She had spent most of her life in the El Paso community. She was married to James Coffey on Nov 12, 1913 at El Paso.
She is survived by her husband; one sister, Mrs. John (Margaret Jenny Cleary) Hynes and one brother, John D. Cleary, both of El Paso, IL.
Mrs. Coffey was severely injured when lightning struck a tree she was under about 10 feet in front of her home in El Paso. She had stepped out of the house to see if her husband, township road commissioner, was returning with some heavy highway equipment because of the storm.
A neighbor, Miss Mollie Carroll, saw her fall. She was semi-conscious when taken in the Otto-Vincent ambulance to St. Joseph's hospital.
