Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. today in Brooks Funeral Directors Chapel in Canyon. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Umbarger with the Rev. Dr. A. Moses officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Umbarger.
Mr. Batenhorst was born Jan. 29, 1924, to John and Mary Knust Batenhorst. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Conflict during World War II and received a Purple Heart, two Bronze Service Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He married Helen Reinart on May 14, 1946, in Hereford. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, FSA, and a volunteer fireman of Umbarger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harold J. Batenhorst; two brothers, Raymond Batenhorst and Sylvester Batenhorst; and a sister, Marie Vorwald.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Diana Batenhorst Stork and husband Greg of Canyon, Kathleen Batenhorst Callarman and husband Tom of Amarillo and Brenda Batenhorst Avent and husband Scott of Umbarger; three sons, Donald Batenhorst and wife Kerri of Amarillo, Gerald Batenhorst and wife Karen of Slaton and Roger Batenhorst and wife Kristi of Umbarger; four sisters, Adella Batenhorst Friemel and Marcella Batenhorst Brandt and husband Dennis, all of Umbarger, Alfrieda Batenhorst Reinart and husband Esidore of Hereford and Laverne Batenhorst Henschied of Marsfield, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
