Earl Joseph Blair was born February 28, 1896, near Clear Spring, MD, to William Lester Blair and Florence May (Shaffer) Blair both from PA. He had a brother, Russell Stanley Blair, and a half-brother, Percy Critsman Blair. His paternal grandparents were Hugh B and Anna E Blair. In his youth, Earl and his brothers were farm workers. Later Earl became an iron worker, building bridges along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. In 1928, he married Opal Estelle Hindman from Arkansas. Their first daughter, Vivian, born in Arkansas, died in her first year. Their second daughter, Marlene Phyllis, was born in Chicago, IL, in 1932. Their third daughter, Shirley Louise, who survives, was born in Pekin, IL, in 1936 where the family had settled.

When Earl and Opal divorced, he moved to Hagerstown, MD, but eventually returned to Pekin, IL, where he lived out his life.
