Burl Edward Shelby, a lifelong resident of Comanche, peacefully passed away, Saturday, March 12, 2016 at his home in Meridian. He was 74 years old. Burl was born August 12, 1941 in Comanche, to Noah W. and Ethel Mae () Shelby.

Burl proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He and Doris Ann Youngblood were united in marriage on April 9, 1964 in Comanche.

He loved fishing, yard work, woodworking, and watching his favorite show, Gunsmoke. More than anything else, Burl enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Doris, of the home; a son, Joey Shelby and wife Amy, Comanche; two daughters: Shelly Coker, Duncan; and Tonya Hogstad and husband Tony, Duncan; 13 grandchildren: Hayli Shelby, Hunter Shelby, Jordan Shelby, Landon Shelby, Josh Shelby, Sammy Coker, Cameron Lawson, Chelsi Lawson, Madison Lawson, Skyler Hunsucker, Carson Hogstad, Kyle Hogstad, and Crissa Goodman; 4 great-grandchildren: Kole Lawson, Izzie Goodman, Emma Goodman, and Bradyn Cass; two sisters: Kathryn Anderson, a nd Vinita Vails, both of Comanche; and special life long friends, Jimmy and Joetta Ledford. Also, many nieces, nephews, and other friends.

Burl was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bud Shelby, and two sisters: Maxine Wright, and Virginia Finnell.

A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 15th at 1:00 p.m. at Fairlawn Cemetery, with Bro. Trent Young officiating, under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home.
