Obituary for Kay Atkinson
Kay Atkinson, 76, a beloved and cherished resident of Monrovia, passed away, on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, in Plainfield Health Care, after a diligent battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on July 19, 1941, in Bloomington, to the late Louis and Cora (Murphy) Henson.

Kay was raised in Monroe county, where she attended Harrodsburg Elementary and Smithville High School. In 36 years of devoted custodial service to the Monroe-Gregg Schools, Kay deservingly retired after caring for and watching over three generations of students.

The ultimate people person, she was full of kindness and greeted everyone with a warm smile, tight hug and “I love you.” In addition to kids and animals, Kay was crazy about Elvis and the Monrovia Bulldogs. She was an avid collector of teddy bears, angels and antiques. She enjoyed traveling, touring and attending various steam shows all over the country. They would travel along with hundreds of other Model T’ers; trailering their trucks to different parts of the United States. Some places they visited include the New England States, Northern Michigan, the Gulf Shores in Alabama, north rim of the Grand Canyon, Toronto, Canada and even got to climb Pikes Peak in Colorado. Claiming several awards and trophies, they have been in competition at the annual Newport Hill Climb for 50 years. Monrovia’s past grand marshals, they have ran in every single Monrovia Festival and Martinsville Fall Foliage parade since the 1960s. Her memberships included the Model T Club of America, Model T Ford International, Noken T’s of Northern Kentucky, Indy 500 Model T Club and West Central Indiana Model T’ers. A positive, outgoing, rocking and a rolling, Monrovia Street Walker…the town of Monrovia will never be the same without her. To know Kay Atkinson was to love her.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Donnie Dean Henson.

Visitation will be held from 1-5pm, on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel in Monrovia. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2pm, on Sunday, August 13, 2017, at the funeral home with additional calling held an hour prior. Immediately following services, Kay and her husband will take their last ride together in the 1926 Model T Ford Ton Truck; leading the funeral procession to burial in Bethesda Cemetery. In honor of the kindness and generosity that Kay shared over the years at school, memorial contributions may be made to the Monrovia Cafeteria to provide lunches for students who forget to bring their money to school.
