Richard Wilson Van Dyke was the youngest son of Freeman Van Dyke. Richard Wilson married Lucinda Carter in Tennessee and they had fourteen children. One daughter, Sarah was born in 1838 and died in 1842 before Richard and Lucinda left Dandridge and moved to Adams County, Illinois about 1850. They lived there until after the Civil War when the family moved to Missouri. One son, Richard Wilson, Jr. moved to Iowa. Other children moved to Meadville, Missouri and the rest of the family settled in Jackson County, Missouri between Independence and Buckner. The graves of all of the children except Sarah and Samuel Houston have been located at this time. Samuel died near Meadville but no records have been found as to where he is buried.

Richard's father, Freeman was the son of Hendrick (Henry) Van Dyck and Amy Freeman, and moved from southern Virginia or Granville, North Carolina area to Dandridge around 1800.
