CUERO -- Dr. W.R. Towery, 80, of Cuero, died Sunday in a Cuero nursing home.
He was born July 25, 1905, in Smithville, Miss. to the late Wiley Azoff and Lonnie Belle Cowart Towery. He married Sophia Ann Toerck on Aug. 22, 1926, in Schroeder. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University and a 1929 graduate of Texas Chiropratic College. He practiced in Yorktown from 1929-1942, then moved to Cuero, practicing until 1958.
A member of the Cuero Lions Club, with 38 years of perfect attendance, he was past president of the Cuero club and former Lions district governor.
He was a member of the Cuero Masonic Lodge 409, a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, was a former school teacher and a former member of the Board of Regents of Texas Chiropractic College.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m Monday at St Mark's Lutheran Church in Cuero with the Rev. William Hassel officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Cuero.
Surviving are his wife, Dr. Ann Towery of Cuero, two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Zimmerman of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Frances Weber of Texas City: a son, Dr Glenn R. Towery of Cuero: two sisters, Elgene Allen of Rockport and Mrs. Irene Wood of Carlsbad. N.M.: two brothers. W.R. Towery of Houston and R. Kenneth Towery of Austin: nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the St. Mark's Lutheran Church building fund or the charity of the donor's choice.
