Born July 26, 1929 in Hickory to Thomas Manly and Sophie Egleston Whitener, Ann made Hickory her home her entire life. A lifelong member of the Church of the Ascension (Episcopal), Mr. and Mrs. Peden were the first couple to be married in the church. Her 80-plus years of service at her Church of the Ascension included over 50 years on the Altar Guild and as a member of the Vestry and St. Monica's Circle.
Outside of church, Mrs. Peden was a long-time member of the Hickory Service League, especially enjoying several of its many projects. Devoted to her family, Mrs. Peden took tremendous pride in raising her children, serving her church and community, and being loyal to her many friends through the years.
Mrs. Peden is survived by her son, Dr. James G. Peden, Jr. and his wife, Charlene, of Greenville, NC, and her daughters, Elizabeth (Ibba) P. Tappe of Durham, NC, Aimee Peden Burke of Chapel Hill, NC, and Sophie P. Allen and her husband, Rick, of Charlotte. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Micah Tappe, Taylor Tappe (Megan), James Peden III, Alex Peden (Hannah), Lindsay Peden, Ann Burke Gatlin (Derek), Paul Burke III, (Caitlin), Elizabeth Burke, Jordan Allen and Sumner Ann Allen; her great granddaughter, Amelia Gwyn (Millie) Gatlin; her sister, Helen Louise Tester, and her sisters-in-law, Ann Byrum Whitener and Donna Whitener. Also surviving are nieces, Croft Whitener Lane, Sarah Tester, Elizabeth Tester, Margaret Savidge, and Laura Whitener, along with many other extended family members.
Mr. Peden was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers, Thomas Manly Whitener, Jr. and William Egleston Whitener, and her nephew, Thomas Manly Whitener III.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Mrs. Peden's past and present caregivers, especially Frances Settlemyre, Ginger Parker, Mary Collins, Mandy Hildebrand, Joye Goss, Ada Barrios, and Aby Argueta, along with the caring staff at Catawba Regional Hospice.
Services for Mrs. Peden will be held at the Church of the Ascension, Episcopal, 726 1st Avenue NW on Friday, June 2 at 11:00 in the morning with the Rev. Karla Woggon officiating. Committal and interment of ashes will immediately follow in the Memorial Courtyard of the parish. The family will receive friends after the service in the Parish Hall.
