Joseph's 3rd great-grandfather was Stephen Hopkins [1581-1644] of Hampshire, England. He had already spent 4 years in Jamestown, Va., living through the "Starving Time", and assisting the Anglican priest at the wedding of Pocahontas and John Rolfe, when he returned to England. In 1620, he and his family left London on the Mayflower for Plymouth, Ma. Called a "stranger" by the Pilgrims because he was not a religious Separatist as they were, he worked as a merchant and assisted Gov. Edward Winslow in forging a peace treaty with the native Wampanoags that lasted for 50 years.
