LENOIR - Cecil George Whitener, 79, of Seehorn Street, died May 17, 1994, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Born March 19, 1915 in Catawba County, he was a son of the late George Ernest and Minnie Etta Barger Whitener.

A member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir, he was the retired president of Barger-Ashe Roofing Co. He was on the board of trustees, a deacon and past president of the Boutwell Sunday School Class at his church. He seervied on the board of directors of the Carolinas Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors, was past governor of the Lenoir Moose Lodge, was a York Rite Mason and a Shriner of the Oasis Temple, and served on the advisory board of Caldwell Savings and Loan. He was a member of the National Roofing Contractors Association.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Suddreth Whitener; a son, Dennis Whitener of Lenoir; two daughters, Anita W. Hoffler of Titusville, Fla. and Sandra W. Jarrell of Mars Hill; a brother, Paul Whitener of Metter, Ga.; a sister, Inez Whitener Nance of Hickory; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Dr. David Smith and Fred Barnes at 11 a.m. Friday at his church. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will be at Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lenoir Love Fund, 304 Main St., Lenoir, N.C. 28645
