Peoria - Joseph Michael Gibson, 57, of Peoria, passed away at 7:38 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2007, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, ER.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1949, in Peoria to Thomas Phillip and Hazel Bridget (Fosbender) Gibson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are one sister, Dolores (Ed) Klein of Peoria; five brothers, Tom (Phyllis) Gibson, Don (Dottie) Gibson, John (Camille) Gibson, Dave (Mary Ann) Gibson and Pat "Chico" Gibson, all of Peoria; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and long-time friend, Rhonda Foster.

He was a self-employed attorney in Peoria.

He graduated from St. Mark's School. He graduated with high honors from Spalding Institute, where he also was an award-winning speech team participant. He was a graduate of Bradley University, where, in the turbulent late 1960s, he was an arbiter in a campus dispute. He graduated from John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

He was an assistant state's attorney in the late 1970s, and was a candidate in 1980 for Peoria County State's Attorney.

He was a beloved "little brother" to his big sister and his five brothers. For 25 years, he and his brothers, along with many of his nephews, participated in the Brothers' Bowling tournament. He was, definitely, a cat lover who will be missed by Blackie and the rest of his "family."

During his years of private practice, he was noted for instances of sensitivity and caring on behalf of clients. He was most proud of one case which made news some years ago, when he presented a weather report showing the time of sunset, disproving an arrest. (He compared it to the similar famous case won by a young lawyer, Abe Lincoln).

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at St. Bernard Catholic Church with Msgr. Paul Showalter officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Wright and Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the rosary at 7:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the Mass at church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in West Peoria.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Newman Foundation at Bradley University. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to www.wrightandsalmon.com.
