Craig Whitener, 78, of Rt. 8, Hickory, died Tuesday in a Burke County hospital, following a period of declining health.

Born May 16, 1911 in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Ellis Shuford and Lillie Mae Abernethy Whitener. He was a retired dairy farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Tansie Mull Whitener; a daughter, Mrs. Joe (Rheda) Teague of Hickory; three sons, Gary A. Whitener, Harold D. Whitener and Buddy S. Whitener of Hickory; three brothers, Roy J. Whitener of Valdese, Millie Whitener of Hickory and Thirman Whitener of Lenoir; four sisters, Edith Young of Valdese, Gladys Cline and Eva Hildebran of Hickory and Thelma Long of Charlotte: nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Ernest Richards at 3 p.m. Thursday at Providence Baptist Church, where he was a member and served as a deacon for many years. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Teague, Monte Whitener, Gregory Whitener, Keith Whitener, Kevin Whitener and Jerry Watts. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Men's Sunday School class and deacons of the church.

The body will be taken to the church today, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the home of Rheda Teague, Rt. 8, Hickory.

Memorials may be made to the Van Fund of Providence Baptist Church, Rt. 4, Box 1030, Hickory, N.C. 28601.
