A.A. Hicks was the fourth child and third son of Benjamin Willis Hicks and Isabella Crews (Hicks). He was the last survivor of his parent's children.

After leaving Yadkin college, he taught at Horner's Academy at Henderson and studied law under his elder brother T. T. Hicks. He was admitted to the bar in 1887. On August 8 1894, he married Miss Hettie Minor of Oxford, and they had four children.

He was twice mayor of Oxford, and he represented the district in the State Senate in 1899, 1903, 1907, 1911, 1923, and 1931. He was a staff Major in the State Guard under Governor Kitchin.

He helped to organize the NC Bar Association, was a loyal Mason and Odd Fellow. For 25 years before his death, he was County Attorney.

He.."taught school several years.. four or five terms a member of the state senate..The fine home of Archibald A. Hicks is opposite the Masonic Orphanage grounds in Oxford. (from "Sketches.." by T.T.Hicks - his brother) Archibald A Hicks looked up and verified the references for this book. His brother T.T. notes "Archibald was sick only twice once with typhoid fever, when three years old, and with pneumonia when 18."

"Pa said to Archibald: "Bill (we called him "Bill" for short) what are you going to do when you become a man?"
Archibald paused a moment, then said: "The day I get 21 I'm going to get on my nag and ride straight out that avenue," pointing toward the road. Perhaps somebody had been "oncombing 'Bill's' hair" that morning. It was the universal rule in those days that every son was entitled to have from his father, on the day he became 21, a horse and saddle and bridle. Alas for me and also Archibald, we never received ours--as such and Archibald, be it said to his credit, never rode far enough from the old roof tree to need a horse to carry him. He did stray off to the Democratic Legislature a few times, but always came back looking pretty gaunt."
