A horrible fight with knives occurred at Wild Cherry, in Wild Cherry township, this county, last Saturday (05/22/1922) afternoon when Walter Kerley, aged 38, was killed. His father Richard Kerley, who only tried to separate the combatants was badly sliced, and Ed Rand and two other of the Rand boys were injured. It is reported that Walter Kerley was cut almost entirely in two and that while in this condition beat Ed Rand almost to death before he died. It is reported that 7 to 8 ribs were cut in two, but that he fought to the close, having only a monkey wrench for a weapon. From what we have been told it was the culmination on bad feeling of 16 years standing, that a few days before this fight some of the Rand and Kerley boys fought about the stock of one family getting into the crop of the other, and that at the school election the older heads met and discussed the matter with this awful effect.

Side note: Walter Kerley is Ed Rand's nephew and Richard Kerley is Ed Rand's brother-in-law.

Lates, Ed Rand violently insane!
20 Nov 2004 George Hartin called and gave me information he had gotten from the state hospital . Ed Rand is buried in the hospital cemetery. He died of smallpox. He was in the state hospital 7 years, 7 months, and 6 days.
