Donald "Don" George Ard was born March 8, 1927 and returned to his Heavenly Home June 16, 2017 at the age of 90. Don was born on the family farm west of Tetonia, Idaho, the fifth child of Joseph N. Ard and Myrtle Westover Ard.

Those fortunate enough to have known him will remember his gentle teasing, kindness, and genuine friendliness. His early years were spent on the farm where he attended the Richvale School, often traveling by horseback in cold winter months, bucking rugged snow drifts. Later, the family moved to town where he enrolled in Driggs Elementary and later Teton High School.

He had a great love of sports, and his high school years were spent boxing and playing football. Later golfing would become his passion.

As World War II raged, Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy during his senior high school year.

On April 13, 1945, he married his sweetheart, Nadine Penfold, in the Logan LDS Temple. Weeks later he entered active service and was deployed to the Philippines.

After the war, he settled back home in Driggs. Here he began a career with the local lumber yard. Their first son, Dennis, daughter, Terri, and son, Shayne, were born here. In 1954 he was transferred to Firth, Idaho. Daughter, Manette, joined the family. In 1958 he moved to Rexburg to manage the Lumber Yard. It was here that daughters, Jolene and Michelle, completed the family.

In 1961 they purchased a small glass shop on Main Street in Rexburg, renamed it Ard's Glass and Paint, then went to work building a successful business. In 1976 the entire business was destroyed in the Teton Dam flood. They built back again. In 1987 they were honored as "Business of the Year."

As a couple Don and Naida loved to square dance, often serving as dance directors for several LDS Ward performances.

Don loved and was proud of his family, he loved spending time at the cabin in Island Park, water skiing and boating in summer (he took his last ride on skis at age 73), and snowmobiling in winter. Endowed with natural musical talent he taught himself to play the cornet and harmonica, entertaining family and friends with impromptu music from the golden oldies at family reunions and gatherings. In later years he played in a senior citizen band.

A true citizen of his community, he sponsored and supported numerous community events. He was a past member of the Rexburg Lions Club, VFW, and many other organizations

In December of 1998, he was saddened by the passing of Naida and in 1999 married long-time friend, Elva L. Hillman, welcoming her family to his. As a couple, they were able to travel, play cards, and enjoy each other's company.

Don is survived by his wife, Elva; children: Dennis (Marsha) Ard, Terri (Bennett) Orr, Shayne (Linda) Ard, Manette (Kirk) Shirley, Jolene (Ron) Carpenter, Michelle (Mike) Clark; stepsons: Rick Hillman, Kent (Ava) Hillman and Mike (Tonya) Hillman; sister, Nelda Ricks; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wife, Naida; granddaughter, Roslyn Shirley; sisters: Wanda Jeppeson, Eva Furness, Anona Hansen, and Nadine Wilding; and brothers: Lysle, Cleon, and Doyle Ard.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, at the LDS Chapel at 602 Sundance, in Rigby, Idaho. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home, 61 N. 1st E., in Rexburg, and Thursday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.

The interment will be at the Driggs Cemetery.
