Dottie was born in Savannah, GA on June 13, 1937. She graduated from Savannah High School, attended Sarah Lawrence College, and received a BA degree from Oglethorpe University. She continued her education at the Sorbonne in Paris and received a Master’s degree in Special Education from Georgia Southern University. One of Dottie’s proudest achievements was helping establish the Exceptional Children’s Program in the Chatham County public schools.
A voracious reader, Dottie was President of the Live Oak Public Library Foundation Board, chairman of the LOPL Gala, and volunteered for a number of years at the Children’s Book Festival. She also served as one of the first docents at the Telfair, served on the Telfair Board, and was President of the Telfair Academy Guild. She was a board member of the Council on World Affairs and Georgia Public Broadcasting. Dottie was a supporter of the Savannah Music Festival, Savannah Children’s Choir, and the Free Enterprise Circle of Junior Achievement. Dottie was a lifelong member of Congregation Mickve Israel.
Most important in Dottie’s life was her family and friends, and she especially loved boating with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Joel, her son and daughter-in-law Bill and Lane, and two grandsons Jim and Alex. She was pre-deceased by her son Jim and her daughter Ellen.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, January 31st at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
