Virgil graduated from Newburg High School with the class of 1960, then served in the US Airforce from 1961 until 1965. He worked for IBM for thirteen years before going into business for himself repairing and selling office equipment. He was a 33rd degree Mason, a member of the Elks Lodge – PER, and an avid fisherman, belonging to the Bourbon County Bass Club.
In addition to his wife Mary, Virgil is also survived by his children, Michael Shelden, Patrick Shelden, and Holly Shelden Gonzalez and husband Phil, all of Fort Scott, Kansas; his mother, Frances Shelden, of Ozark, Missouri; three sisters, Judy Hollcraft and husband John, of Ocala, Florida, Linda Kerby of Hernando, Florida, Beverly Posey and Harvey Lane of Ozark, Missouri; ten grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil M. Shelden, a brother, Ronald J. Shelden, and a brother-in-law, Barry Kerby.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with burial following in the Hooker Cemetery, Hooker, Missouri.
