Mrs. Van Roekel Dies at Age 72
Funeral Services for Mrs. Minnie Van Roekel, 72, who died at a Cherokee hospital last Tuesday, were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Barnard Funeral Home. Rev. C. E. Custer, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiated with burial in Grace Hill Cemetery.
She suffered a stroke some time ago and had been in the state hospital at Cherokee until her death.
Mrs. Van Roekel, long time resident of this vicinity was born January 8, 1887, in Holland. One of nine children, she came to the United States with her parents at the age of 3 and settled at Sioux Center.
Four of her brothers, Garret, Steve, William, and Arnold, and one sister, Johanna and her parents preceded her in death.
Following her marriage to William Van Roekel she resided on a farm near Hawarden. After his death six years ago she moved into town.
Survivors include, a daughter Mrs. Grace Van Houten of Marshall, Minn.; a son John Van Roekel of Valley Springs, S. D.; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Van Raalte of Rock Rapids and Mrs. Grace Overman of Salem, Ore. and a brother, Henry Van Roekel of Lennox, S. D.
